Who We Are
Situated in Southwestern Indiana on the banks of the Ohio River, Newburgh is a thriving community notable for its quaint shops and friendly people. Established in 1803, Newburgh demonstrates a unique history that attracts many visitors.
In the early 1850’s a small group of Newburgh families of German descent met and expressed a common desire to hear the Gospel presented in German. Arrangements were made for a German-speaking minister to occasionally visit the community and provide the desired German worship services. Their first services were held in the home of those involved. The German Evangelical Church of Newburgh officially organized in 1855. The common register of 1857 listed approximately 40 members. In 1863 property was donated for the original church site which is still a part of the current church property. In fact, the cornerstone of the original church can currently be found in the entranceway of our present church building. Likewise, stained glass from the original church continues to provide beauty to our current sanctuary.
Growth continued throughout Zion’s history as increased membership required additional educational rooms and in 1952 an educational facility was built across the street from the church. At that time our official church name was Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church of Newburgh. In 1957 the Evangelical and Reformed Church and the Congregational and Christian Church merged and created the existing United Church of Christ. In 1957 Zion’s official name became Zion United Church of Christ, Newburgh.
The need for a new church became evident as Zion continued to grow in membership. On August 9th, 1959 the cornerstone for our existing church was laid and our present church was completed in 1960. In 1981, a new educational and administrative wing was completed as Zion continued to grow. On November 5th, 1994 dedication services were held for a new Christian Education building.
Faithfulness to God’s word and a determination to share the gospel have been blessed by God throughout Zion’s history. As we go forward we will remain faithful to that mission.
